Best Remedy for Colic Print E-mail

Question

Victoria,
What is your best remedy for colic that is not too common... or may be a common remedy/coping method which has the greatest rate of success?
— Katherine, La Jolla, California

Answer

Dr. Ari Brown, an award winning, Harvard trained pediatrician, mom and co-author of Baby 411 : Clear Answers and Smart Advice for Your Baby’s First Year (Windsor Peak Press, 2006) graciously answers this question -

A recent study in Pediatrics this month showed a 95% improvement (from 3 hours of crying down to 1 hour) with a daily dose of a probiotic called Lactobacillus reuteri. This was compared head to head with a popular gas drop (simethicone) which only showed improvement in 7% of patients (90 studied). While this may not be the cure-all, it may be the treatment of the future. Right now, the most effective remedy is TIME. All babies outgrow colic by about 3 months of age.
